Situated in the centre of Italy, Umbria is a somewhat small region, the only one in central Italy without a coastline. It belongs to the Tyrrhenian side of the peninsula and borders with the Marches to the north-east and east, with Latium to the south and Tuscany to the west and north-west. It has the fourth lowest population of all the Italian regions (only Basilicata, Molise and Valle d'Aosta have fewer inhabitants) while the density of population is about half the Italian average.

History. Morphologically, Umbria consists of mountains (29%) and hills (71%). The deep divide formed by the Tiber Valley and Valle Umbra separates the Apennines (to the east) from the Pre-Apennine hills (to the west), the former being higher and steeper while the latter are low and rounded. Perugia was a very important Etruscan city with marvellous buildings

Perugia was a very important Etruscan city with marvellous buildings such as the Etruscan Arch or the Etruscan Well. The Roman emperor Ottaviano conquered the city and gave it a new name: Augusta Perusia. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the city became independent town with a own council, but often divided into fierce fights against families like the Baglioni.

This family was the only which contended the city with the Papal States in 1531. The pope Paolo III, as a symbol of his power, decided to build the “Rocca Paolina”, a huge rock above the old city. This power finished in 1860, year of the unification of Italy.
