Situated in the centre of Italy, Umbria is a somewhat small region, the only one in central Italy without a coastline. It belongs to the Tyrrhenian side of the peninsula and borders with the Marches to the north-east and east, with Latium to the south and Tuscany to the west and north-west. It has the fourth lowest population of all the Italian regions (only Basilicata, Molise and Valle d'Aosta have fewer inhabitants) while the density of population is about half the Italian average.
History. Morphologically, Umbria consists of mountains (29%) and hills (71%). The deep divide formed by the Tiber Valley and Valle Umbra separates the Apennines (to the east) from the Pre-Apennine hills (to the west), the former being higher and steeper while the latter are low and rounded. Some of the highest mountain ranges and massifs are the Sibillini Mountains, on the border with the Marches, Mount Maggio (1,416 m.) and mount Subasio (1,290 m.).

Fabro in Umbria, Italy
Fabro, one of the westernmost Umbrian centres, is situated on a hill near the Chiani stream. The economy of Fabro is traditionally tied to agriculture, while on the other hand the fact that it is near the "Sole" motorway, half way between Florence and Rome, has accelerated its growth and development in the handicraft and tourism sectors.
Brief History - Fabro is a fortified village founded in Medieval times and its history coincides with that of Orvieto. No historical documents exist prior to 1810 because Napoleon’s troops destroyed the communal archives when passing through this area. The only document remaining is the Statute of Castello di Fabro drawn up in 1548
Sights To See - In the centre of town
Castle, Town Hall, Church of St. Martin (19th cent.)
Surrounding Area - Castle at Carnaiola, Ecological Park, at Villalba
Folklore and Events - Festival of the "Befana Fabrese" (January), (kindly old witch who brings gifts on Epiphany). Fabrese Carnival (February). Canta ... Read More...
