The elongated region of Puglia (Apulia) forms the south-east part of the peninsula, on the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, delimited by Molise to the north-west and by Campania and Basilicata to the west. As far as size and population are concerned, it is the seventh largest region in Italy and its population density is above the national average.

 

History. Although Puglia comprises a diversity of morphological zones with clearly defined characteristics, it retains a precise uniformity, conferred by the underlying rock and its structural constant, for the Puglia landscape consists prevalently of horizontal lines and gentle contours, which rarely take on the appearance of mountains, even at higher altitudes. These forms owe their existence to the large extensions of limestone rock in vast horizontal or sub-horizontal strata. Castel del Monte, the octagonal castle situated in the territory of Andria built on the orders of Frederick II of Swabia, is one of the eight images featured on Italy's Euro coins, shown on the back of the one and two-cent pieces.

 

Canne is the heart of an extremely interesting archaeological area with the remains of the city famous for the battle in 216 BC when the Carthaginians led by Hannibal defeated the Romans to become the rulers of southern Italy. More than 25,000 fell in the battle and 10,000 Romans were taken prisoner. In this exceptional archaeological site there are also remains of the Neolithic, Copper and Bronze Ages, the Apulian civilisation, the Roman era and the Middle Ages.
