Piedmont lies in a peripherical position with respect to the rest of Italy but its relative proximity to the sea and contact with France and Switzerland have, over the centuries, led to the creation of an important commercial transit network which has favoured its present economic development.

Information about Saluggia in the Province of Vercelli
Saluggia rises near one of the banks of the Dora Baltea river. Its name place seems to date back to the Longobardic period, where the “curtes” were common. These were farmyards similar to modern ones, with a square layout and an internal courtyard surrounded by buildings used as houses; the main building was called “sala”.
The Castle of Saluggia, according to testimonies from the eighteenth century, was made of an imposing fortress with six towers. Nowadays only two are left, together with the main body which is partially being used as a private home and the remaining part, where it is still possible to see some merlons of the ancient building.
Towards the middle of the XVI century, the Pastoris counts had a new palace built. This is now the headquarters of the Town Hall, a strong and majestic building, surrounded by a deep moat.
