Piedmont lies in a peripherical position with respect to the rest of Italy but its relative proximity to the sea and contact with France and Switzerland have, over the centuries, led to the creation of an important commercial transit network which has favoured its present economic development.
This is the largest region of continental Italy, second only to Sicily. Its density of 174 inhabitants per sq km. makes it the fifth most densely populated region in Italy, and slightly under the national average.
The Italian regions which border with Piedmont are Valle d'Aosta to the northwest, Lombardy to the east, Emilia-Romagna to the southeast and Liguria to the south.

Fondazione museo "Francesco Borgogna" - Vercelli in Toscana
Dopo la Galleria Sabauda di Torino, in Piemonte, c’è solo il Museo Borgogna, una delle dieci pinacoteche più importanti d’Italia. Le 450 opere attualmente esposte, tra cui quadri, arredi e oggetti d’arte derivano dalla collezione che Antonio Borgogna ha donato alla città nel 1906, insieme al suo palazzo neoclassico, oggi sede del museo.
Di grande importanza l’insieme di opere della pittura rinascimentale piemontese e vercellese depositate dal locale Istituto di Belle Arti: un centinaio fra affreschi staccati e pale d’altare ne testimoniano l’eccezionale sviluppo. Si tratta, per la maggior parte di opere di Defedente Ferrari, Giovenone, Gaudenzio Ferrari e Bernardino Lanino. Ampio spazio viene dedicato alla pittura rinascimentale lombarda, toscana e veneta con dipinti di Tiziano, di Luini, del Francia e del Sodoma, ma anche all’arte fiamminga e olandese del XVII secolo fino alla pittura italiana a cavallo tra Ottocento e Novecento.
