Piedmont lies in a peripherical position with respect to the rest of Italy but its relative proximity to the sea and contact with France and Switzerland have, over the centuries, led to the creation of an important commercial transit network which has favoured its present economic development.
This is the largest region of continental Italy, second only to Sicily. Its density of 174 inhabitants per sq km. makes it the fifth most densely populated region in Italy, and slightly under the national average.
The Italian regions which border with Piedmont are Valle d'Aosta to the northwest, Lombardy to the east, Emilia-Romagna to the southeast and Liguria to the south.

Museo Scaglia - Vercelli in Piemonte
Il Museo Scaglia è una Casa-Museo dedicata al pittore Cesare Scaglia. Nasce per volontà della figlia, Aida Scaglia, che, dopo la morte del padre, avvenuta nel 1944, decide di allestire una mostra-museo a lui intitolata. Aida raccoglie non solo opere del padre che considerava particolarmente rappresentative, ma anche mobili, oggetti d'arredo, libri, gioielli, ricordi di amici, dando un'immagine della figura paterna nel suo complesso. Aida Scaglia muore nel 1978 lasciando al Comune di Varallo il patrimonio museale di Casa Scaglia. L'11 Giugno 2005, dopo 27 anni, il Museo Scaglia torna a rivivere adempiendo le volontà di Aida e contribuendo a conservare la memoria del pittore e dell'ambiente in cui viveva.
