Lombardy covers approximately the centre of the Po Valley, as well as extending over the middle of the Italian Alps. It borders with Switzerland to the north, Emilia-Romagna to the south, Piedmont to the west and Trentino-Alto Adige and Venetia to the east. The region (23,856 sq km.) is only the fourth largest in Italy though it is unquestionably the most densely populated (c. 8,879,000); the population density (372 inhabitants per sq.km) makes Lombardy the second region, after Campania; 1/14 of the country's entire population is concentrated in the Province of Milan.
History. Three distinct natural zones can be fairly easily distinguished in the Lombardy region: mountain, hill and plain. Santuario di Caravaggio - Bergamo
La basilica sorge in una vasta piazza cinta da portici simmetrici che corrono con 200 arcate per uno sviluppo di quasi 800 metri. Nel piazzale antistante il Viale si trovano l'obelisco, cui abbiamo già accennato, ed una fontana lunga quasi 50 metri. L'acqua di questa fontana passa sotto il Santuario, raccoglie nel suo corso quella del sacro Fonte ed esce nel piazzale Sud accolta in una piscina dove i fedeli fanno bagnature alle membra malate.
Sotto il triportico di ponente, davanti alla facciata principale, è stata allogata nel 1942 la Via Crucis. Nello stesso anno, al centro del piazzaletto, fu eretto un crocefisso a ricordo del Giubileo Episcopale di Papa Pio XII. Questo piazzale è di norma riservato alle funzioni all'aperto, soprattutto in relazione alle adunate e benedizioni degli ammalati.
