Lombardy covers approximately the centre of the Po Valley, as well as extending over the middle of the Italian Alps. It borders with Switzerland to the north, Emilia-Romagna to the south, Piedmont to the west and Trentino-Alto Adige and Venetia to the east. The region (23,856 sq km.) is only the fourth largest in Italy though it is unquestionably the most densely populated (c. 8,879,000); the population density (372 inhabitants per sq.km) makes Lombardy the second region, after Campania; 1/14 of the country's entire population is concentrated in the Province of Milan.
History. Three distinct natural zones can be fairly easily distinguished in the Lombardy region: mountain, hill and plain. I Fantoni - Bergamo
Gli itinerari selezionano solo alcune delle numerose località bergamasche che conservano testimonianze artistiche dell'attività dei Fantoni, famiglia di artisti del legno e del marmo operanti in Lombardia dal XV secolo.
L'attività dei componenti della celebre famiglia fu varia e multiforme: tra essi si contano scultori, intagliatori e disegnatori che eseguirono opere di carattere sacro e profano, utilizzando, a seconda dei casi, il legno, il marmo o l'avorio. Nella realizzazione delle opere si susseguirono ben otto generazioni di artisti-artigiani.
L'attività di intagliatori e scultori del legno, risale almeno al secolo XV anche se è effettivamente documentata solo intorno al 1630. E' a quest'epoca che Adriano, con i fratelli e il figlio Donato, porta il lavoro a una ricchezza di repertorio e un'intensità operativa da far ritenere avviata una produzione di bottega.
