Capital of Italy and Latium, the city lies 20 m. above sea level on the banks of the Tiber, in the Campagna di Roma. In the fourth and third centuries BC. it went to war with its neighbours (Latins, Etruscans, Aequi, Volsci, Sabini, Samnites, Umbrians, etc.) for supremacy over the area and the whole of central-southern Italy, until in 264 BC. it gained control of the peninsula.

Campo de' Fiori in Rome Italy
Campo de' Fiori is one of the trendiest parts of Rome, lively day and night. On weekdays at the crack of dawn, the "Field of Flowers" bursts into life as market workers prepare their stalls ready for Rome's finest market ( Mon to Fri 0600-1300). Come rain or shine, under giant multi-coloured ombrellone (umbrellas) are dazzling displays of fruit, flowers, fish, salami, sun-dried tomatoes, olives, artichokes, pesto, peppers, roughly cut hunks of parmesan and all the tastes, fragrances and colours of Italian cuisine - a veritable feast for the senses.
By night, cafes, bars and restaurants fill the piazza, making it one of Rome's most animated nightspots.
