In the fourth and third centuries BC. it went to war with its neighbours (Latins, Etruscans, Aequi, Volsci, Sabini, Samnites, Umbrians, etc.) for supremacy over the area and the whole of central-southern Italy, until in 264 BC. it gained control of the peninsula.

Mouth of Truth (bocca della Verita) in Rome Italy
Bocca della Verita can be found at the unadorned church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. The mouth of truth is a fierce stone face once used as an ancient well cover. It is set in the wall of the portico and pilgrims believed that the mouth would bite the hand of anyone who lied!
Cross the Piazza della Bocca della Verita to the Republican Temples of the Forum Boarium.
The rectangular temple was dedicated to Portunus, God of Rivers and Ports, as it was here on the banks around Isola Tiberina that the port of ancient Rome laid.
