Latium (Lazio) is a region in Central Italy, on the Tyrrhenian side of the peninsula, except for a small strip on the Adriatic side. Lying to the west on the Tyrrhenian Sea, this region borders to the north with Tuscany, with Umbria and for a short stretch with the Marches. To the east Latium borders with Abruzzo and briefly with Molise and with Campania to the south; within its present limits it has not, however, geographical unity.
History. The morphology of Latium is very complex but four main sub-regions can be defined: the Tyrrhenian coast, the inland plains, the mountains of the Latium Pre-Apennines and a true Apennine area. The coast is mainly low and uniform, broken only by the spurs of Linaro point, Mount Circeo (541 m.) and the Gaeta headland: the Ponzian Islands, which are part of Latium, lie opposite the south coast.

Santa Maria della Libera - Frosinone nel Lazio
La chiesa venne edificata nel 1125, per volere di due nobildonne, Ottolina e Maria, raffigurate nel mosaico sul portale d’ingresso della chiesa. Il nome le deriva dall’aver preso il posto del tempio pagano, dedicato ad Ercole liberatore, di cui sono stati usati molti frammenti. La facciata, molto austera, è preceduta da un portico a tre arcate; da notare sull’ultimo gradino della ripida scalinata, le tabulae lusorie, una sorta di dama per il gioco delle pedine, molto in voga tra i romani. L’interno, di austera semplicità, è a tre navate ed è coperto da un grande soffitto a capriate.Sul lato sinistro della chiesa, si trova l’arco trionfale di Marcantonio, con colonne binate e capitelli corinzi. Esso è una delle tante testimonianze d’epoca romana, rinvenute su questo territorio un tempo attraversato dall’antica Via Latina, di cui resta ancora visibile un tratto di basolato stradale.
