A region of north-east Italy, bordering with Austria to the north and Yugoslavia to the east and south-east, to the south it lies on the Adriatic and borders with Venetia to the west and south-west. Until 1947, this area was known as Venezia Giulia.

Day Trips in Friuli-Venezia Giulia - Mountains
Worth pointing out in the foothills and mountains is Spilimbergo for its mosaics and castle and San Daniele for its charm, not to mention its world-famous prosciutto. From Valcellina (in the province of Pordenone) to the valleys of Carnia and Tarvisio (in the province of Udine) there is one astonishing mountain panorama after another. In this area, which can stand its own against the Dolomites any day, there are natural parks and tourist resorts with all the facilities necessary for skiing in winter and trekking and climbing in summer. Friuli-Venezia Giulia really is that "small compendium of the universe" so dear to Ippolito Nievo.
