A region of north-east Italy, bordering with Austria to the north and Yugoslavia to the east and south-east, to the south it lies on the Adriatic and borders with Venetia to the west and south-west. Until 1947, this area was known as Venezia Giulia.
At the end of the Second World War, it underwent great changes following the transfer of the Fiume and Pola provinces and of wide parts of the areas of Gorizia and Trieste to Yugoslavia.
By the Agreement stipulated in 1954, the `A area' of the Free Territory of Trieste passed to Italian administration, a passage ratified in 1975 by the Treaty of Osimo, which officially recognized the `B area' as part of Yugoslavia.
As regards particular historical events, the problems connected with the new eastern border and its complex ethnical composition, led to Friuli-Venezia Giulia being recognized as an autonomous Province with a special statute.

Thanks to its layout, limited distances and excellent road and motorway network, Friuli-Venezia Giulia offer a variety of tourist itineraries. The Region can be divided into three areas: the coast with its seaside resorts; the central area, rich in history and art; and the mountains with their natural attractions. But these itineraries can easily intersect in a myriad of ways.
The coastline from Trieste (a city with a large number of attractions) to Lignano varies substantially: rugged cliffs with fascinating small coves and gems set into the rocks such as the Castle of Duino or the Castle of Miramare, surrounded by gardens give way to the lagoons of Grado and Marano. You must stop off at Grado, Aquileia's ancient "rival", with its rich urban fabric and numerous High Middle Ages churches; at this point the cliffs have been replaced by the triumphantly golden beaches of Lignano Sabbiadoro, which also boasts an odd spiral-shaped pine wood, designed by the architect D'Olivo.
