Situated at 34 m. above sea level on the plain confined by the rivers Secchia and Panaro; the Via Emilia runs through the urban area. Ancient centre of the Ligurians, in 183 BC. the city became a Roman colony, known as Mutina, an important agricultural and commercial market. After the Barbarian invasions, it flourished again under the Canossas (11th-12th century), as a free municipality and later, in the 13th century, passed under the rule of the Estensis, who held it until the French Revolution. After 1815 Modena was an Austrian possession until 1860 when it was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.

Monuments: The Duomo (Romanesque - 12th-13th century, sculptures by Wiligelmo), the Ghirlandine (a tower, 86 m. high-14th century), the Palazzo Ducale (17th century, now seat of the Military Academy), the Palazzo Comunale (12th century), the church of San Francesco (Gothic), the Pantheon degli Estensi (17th century).

Day Trips Around Correggio, Emilia Romagna

 

First route: San Prospero - Budrio - Fazzano (14 Km of which 6 are gravel roads or minor roads). You left Correggio, go along the route of the old railway Reggio - Correggio and get to Cava Casanova (Casanova quarry: a thick wood being the shelter for the migratory birds).
You may continue on direction of San Prospero (farmhouse, church) and Budrio (church), reaching the naturalistic oasis of via (street) Imbreto (hedges, forest trees and full protected green belt). You may go back to Correggio through Fazzano (church, Davoli lodge, a row of elms).

 

Second route: Canolo - Fosdondo (10 Km of which 4 are gravel roads or minor roads ). By leaving Correggio you go along via (street) Carletti (hedges, parks of the Villas Paparelli and Recordati) and reach Canolo (church, castle).
From Canolo you may set out for Fosdondo (church). The road is bordered with British oaks. From Fosdondo, following the route of the old railway, you may reach Casanova quarry.
