Museo Monumento al Deportato, Sinagoga, ex Campo di concentramento di Fossoli
The visit to the Museum monument for the deported prisoners is the main stop on route which witnesses the presence of Jews in Carpi up until the beginning of the 1900's and it bears witness to the tragic events of deportation of the Jewish people which took place during the World War II.
The Synagogue, which is inside Palace of Portico del Grano in Via Rovighi (also known as Via del Ghetto), was built between 1859 and 1861 with the project of Achille Sammarini.
This place of worship, recognizable from the outside only by an ornated doorway and small marble steps, is decorated with stucco/plaster and scagliola finishings, trimmed with gold and monochrome friezes.
The structure of the tabernacle with Corinthian columns is still clear, where once stood the "aron" while on the opposite wall the women's gallery is visible.
