This is one of the largest Italian regions (the sixth), an intermediate zone linking the north with the centre of the country, the part of continental Italy joining the Italian peninsula; as such, it is of great importance from the point of view of communications.

Beginning from the late Middle Ages and even more during the Renaissance, large land reclamations were carried out so as to progressively drain these marshes.
Nevertheless even today the local landscape shows signs of the old swamps.

As far as the tract of Novellara is concerned, it got moreover particular importance the demarcation line which bounded the territory north-and southwards, between the main town and the village of S. Giovanni della Fossa which represented the limit of the so called "hollow", i.e. that wide flooded and swampy area which lapped the city of Reggio.
