Lying on the Tyrrhenian Sea in a sweeping curve between the mouth of the Garigliano and the Gulf of Policastro, Campania is chiefly a maritime region, a transit area and a node for the principal lines of communication which cross the Apennines, linking South Italy with the central-northern regions. It is the twelfth largest region, has the second highest number of inhabitants after Lombardy, and the highest density of population in Italy. It borders with Latium to the north-west, Molise to the north, Puglia to the north-east and Basilicata to the south. To the west it lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
History. Campania can structurally be divided into two clearly defined zones stretching northwest-southeast parallel to the coast. Inland rise the Campania and Lucanian Apennines, separated by the Sella di Conza (700 m.) and the upper Sele valley. Arte, Storia e Religione - La leggenda delle Streghe di Benevento
Benevento, contornata da rilievi appenninici e adagiata su una conca naturale, ha una storia molto articolata, per certi versi avvolta nel mistero. Molti avranno sentito parlare delle “streghe di Benevento”, personaggi leggendari la cui fama si diffuse proprio a partire dal 700 d.C., durante l’epoca della dominazione longobarda.
La credenza nell’esistenza delle streghe, infatti, nacque e si fuse con gli echi delle misteriose usanze dei longobardi, un popolo fedele alle proprie tradizioni, che praticava anche nei territori conquistati i riti legati al culto del dio Wothan. Un rituale, in particolare, prevedeva che i cavalieri longobardi si riunissero fuori dalle mura della città, precisamente in un bosco di noci, e qui, intrecciandosi in caroselli equestri e corse sfrenate, lanciavano frecce contro una pelle di caprone appesa ad un albero di noce, consacrato al dio Wothan.
