Lying on the Tyrrhenian Sea in a sweeping curve between the mouth of the Garigliano and the Gulf of Policastro, Campania is chiefly a maritime region, a transit area and a node for the principal lines of communication which cross the Apennines, linking South Italy with the central-northern regions. It is the twelfth largest region, has the second highest number of inhabitants after Lombardy, and the highest density of population in Italy. It borders with Latium to the north-west, Molise to the north, Puglia to the north-east and Basilicata to the south. To the west it lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
History. Campania can structurally be divided into two clearly defined zones stretching northwest-southeast parallel to the coast. Inland rise the Campania and Lucanian Apennines, separated by the Sella di Conza (700 m.) and the upper Sele valley. Benevento in Campania - Forchia
Il paese di Forchia è ubicato su di una collina boscosa, folta di castagni ai piedi del Monte S. Bernardo. Il paese è noto per essere situato vicino al luogo della celebre sconfitta dei romani ad opera dei sanniti nel 321 a.C.; infatti, secondo alcuni storici, esso prende il nome dal latino “furcula” ossia “gola, passo” per la sua ubicazione geografica posta all’interno di una gola tra due monti.
In epoca longobarda fu sede di un castaldato. Seguì poi quasi ininterrottamente le vicende feudali ed amministrative del vicino centro di Arpaia. Appartenne poi alla casata dei Della Leonessa, poi alla famiglia dei Guevara, dei Carafa ed infine dei Caracciolo, entrando a far parte della provincia di Benevento nel 1861 a seguito dell’Unità d’Italia.
Da vedere: resti di antiche cisterne sannite, Palazzo D’Ambrosio, Chiesa di S. Alfonso de’ Liguori, Chiesa di S. Nicola.
