Lying on the Tyrrhenian Sea in a sweeping curve between the mouth of the Garigliano and the Gulf of Policastro, Campania is chiefly a maritime region, a transit area and a node for the principal lines of communication which cross the Apennines, linking South Italy with the central-northern regions. It is the twelfth largest region, has the second highest number of inhabitants after Lombardy, and the highest density of population in Italy. It borders with Latium to the north-west, Molise to the north, Puglia to the north-east and Basilicata to the south. To the west it lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
History. Campania can structurally be divided into two clearly defined zones stretching northwest-southeast parallel to the coast. Inland rise the Campania and Lucanian Apennines, separated by the Sella di Conza (700 m.) and the upper Sele valley. Italy - Information on Guardia Sanframondi in the Province of Benevento
Guardia Sanframondi, village of Longobard and Norman origins, has still got a medioeval aspect. The current built-up area developed around a castle built in 1139 and wished for by Raone, Norman progenitor of the Sanframondo family. Recently restored, the castle keeps entirely its ancient grandeur and majesty. The village first belonged to the Sanframondo, then passed to the Della Marra and then to the Sanframondo again until 1483, when it became a possesion of the Carafa until the fall of feudalism in 1806.
The village is plunged in a marvellous natural environment rich in vineyards and olive groves: its d.o.c. wine “Guardiolo”, famous in Italy and abroad, represents the main economical resource.
Every seven years important religious events take place, still keeping the original medioeval characteristics: after the 15 August the entire population participates in the Penitential Processions of Our Lady of the Assumption organized in the four quarters of the village.
