Lying on the Tyrrhenian Sea in a sweeping curve between the mouth of the Garigliano and the Gulf of Policastro, Campania is chiefly a maritime region, a transit area and a node for the principal lines of communication which cross the Apennines, linking South Italy with the central-northern regions. It is the twelfth largest region, has the second highest number of inhabitants after Lombardy, and the highest density of population in Italy. It borders with Latium to the north-west, Molise to the north, Puglia to the north-east and Basilicata to the south. To the west it lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
History. Campania can structurally be divided into two clearly defined zones stretching northwest-southeast parallel to the coast. Inland rise the Campania and Lucanian Apennines, separated by the Sella di Conza (700 m.) and the upper Sele valley. Benevento in Campania - Limatola
Sulla sponda destra del fiume Volturno ed a pochi chilometri da Caserta è ubicato il paese di Limatola. Caratteristico il centro storico abbarbicato intorno al castello di epoca normanna che, nel corso dei secoli, ha subito ampliamenti e trasformazioni. Le prime notizie storiche documentate risalgono all’anno 842, allorchè nel suo territorio, si svolse una battaglia tra i longobardi beneventani e salernitani, anche se alcuni ritrovamenti archeologici, attesterebbero la presenza di un sito urbano già nel periodo romano.
In epoca medioevale fu feudo di Guglielmo de Beaumont, dei Marzano, della famiglia Della Ratta, degli Acquaviva, dei de Capoa, dei Gambacorta, dei Mastelloni ed infine dei Carafa di Maddaloni che ne tennero il possesso fino all’abolizione della feudalità. Con l’Unità d’Italia fu aggregato alla provincia di Benevento. Da vedere: Ruderi del castello, Chiesa dell’Annunziata, Chiesa di S.Biagio, Chiesa di Sant’Eligio.
