Lying on the Tyrrhenian Sea in a sweeping curve between the mouth of the Garigliano and the Gulf of Policastro, Campania is chiefly a maritime region, a transit area and a node for the principal lines of communication which cross the Apennines, linking South Italy with the central-northern regions. It is the twelfth largest region, has the second highest number of inhabitants after Lombardy, and the highest density of population in Italy. It borders with Latium to the north-west, Molise to the north, Puglia to the north-east and Basilicata to the south. To the west it lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
History. Campania can structurally be divided into two clearly defined zones stretching northwest-southeast parallel to the coast. Inland rise the Campania and Lucanian Apennines, separated by the Sella di Conza (700 m.) and the upper Sele valley. Italy - Information on Pietrelcina in the Province of Benevento
Pietrelcina is situated on a bend of a tributary of the river Tammaro. It is famous all over the world because here, on 25 May 1887, exactly in Vico Storto Valle n. 32, Francesco Forgione (Padre Pio from Pietrelcina) was born and baptized in the church St. Anna. Padre Pio was canonized on 16 June 2002 by Pope John Paul II.
Pietrelcina, fascinating agricultural village of ancient origins, located on a spur, was mentioned for the first time in a document dated 1101. During the centuries the village was a feud of several families: the Caracciolo, the D’Aquino, the Carafa and the famous jurist Bartolomeo Camerario. It has belonged to the province of Benevento since 1861, after the unity of Italy.
NOT TO BE MISSED:
1. Church of the Capuchin Friars
2. Churches of St. Maria degli Angeli and St. Anna
3. The castle
4. The house where Padre Pio was born, the Masseria Forgione in Piana Romana and the elm under which the Saint had the “invisible” stigmata on 7 November 1910
