Lying on the Tyrrhenian Sea in a sweeping curve between the mouth of the Garigliano and the Gulf of Policastro, Campania is chiefly a maritime region, a transit area and a node for the principal lines of communication which cross the Apennines, linking South Italy with the central-northern regions. It is the twelfth largest region, has the second highest number of inhabitants after Lombardy, and the highest density of population in Italy. It borders with Latium to the north-west, Molise to the north, Puglia to the north-east and Basilicata to the south. To the west it lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
History. Campania can structurally be divided into two clearly defined zones stretching northwest-southeast parallel to the coast. Benevento in Campania - San Marco dei Cavoti
San Marco dei Cavoti è uno dei centri più rinomati della Valfortore per la presenza di piccole e svariate attività industriali, fra le quali assume rilievo quella della produzione del torrone, conosciuto in tutta Italia. La prima fabbrica artigianale nacque nel lontano 1891 ed i successivi laboratori artigianali, sorti negli anni hanno prodotto vari tipi di torrone: dai rinomati croccantini, ai gustosi torroni al cioccolato, al gianduia, al caffè, al limone, all’arancio, ecc. Di origine medioevale, è ricordato per la prima volta nel 1385, anche se poco distante dal centro abitato, in località Zenna, sorgeva l’antica città sannita Cenna.
Di certo è che San Marco fu fondato da una colonia di Provenzali, venuti al servizio degli Angioini. Il termine Cavoti deriva dal francese Gavots ed indica gli abitanti di Gap, città della Provenza, dalla quale sembra che provenisse la colonia più numerosa.
