Lying on the Tyrrhenian Sea in a sweeping curve between the mouth of the Garigliano and the Gulf of Policastro, Campania is chiefly a maritime region, a transit area and a node for the principal lines of communication which cross the Apennines, linking South Italy with the central-northern regions. It is the twelfth largest region, has the second highest number of inhabitants after Lombardy, and the highest density of population in Italy. It borders with Latium to the north-west, Molise to the north, Puglia to the north-east and Basilicata to the south. To the west it lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
History. Campania can structurally be divided into two clearly defined zones stretching northwest-southeast parallel to the coast. Benevento in Campania - Vitulano
E’ situato ai piedi della Dormiente del Sannio costituita dai monti Pentime, Camposauro e monte Caruso; ricco di foreste e di sorgenti quali Fontana Reale, Cortedonica, Foggiano e San Pietro. La fontana più celebre della zona è quella detta Reale; la sorgente di Cortedonica è quella che disseta l’intero Paese. Ai piedi del Pentime vi è la “Grotta dei Briganti”, luogo di un insediamento preistorico risalente al periodo del neolitico. Nella grotta sono state trovate lame silicee, punti di frecce, raschiatoi ed un corredo di ceramiche (2900 a.C.).
Insediamento sannitico, fece parte nel Medioevo di un castaldato alle dipendenze di Tocco, fu poi feudo di Giulio Acquaviva d’Aragona; quindi passò ai Carafa e ai D’Avalos. L’economia è prevalentemente agricola e vengono prodotti vino e olio di ottima qualità. Di particolare pregio è il “Pecorino Vitulanese”.
