Lying on the Tyrrhenian Sea in a sweeping curve between the mouth of the Garigliano and the Gulf of Policastro, Campania is chiefly a maritime region, a transit area and a node for the principal lines of communication which cross the Apennines, linking South Italy with the central-northern regions. It is the twelfth largest region, has the second highest number of inhabitants after Lombardy, and the highest density of population in Italy. It borders with Latium to the north-west, Molise to the north, Puglia to the north-east and Basilicata to the south. To the west it lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
History. Campania can structurally be divided into two clearly defined zones stretching northwest-southeast parallel to the coast. Benevento in Campania - Foglianise
Foglianise, centro agricolo e commerciale, dominato dalle pareti rocciose del monte Caruso ove, a mezza costa, è ubicata la chiesa rupestre di San Michele Arcangelo. Il culto del santo guerriero, risalente intorno all’VIII – IX secolo, fu esercitato dapprima in una grotta naturale, davanti al cui ingresso venne costruita una chiesa già esistente nella seconda metà del XVI secolo. Il paese, di origine romana, ebbe il suo sviluppo urbanistico durante il periodo della dominazione longobarda.
Questa località ha fatto parte dei casali di Tocco e quindi di Vitulano, di cui ha sempre seguito la sorte amministrativa e feudale. Nel centro del paese, degna di una visita è la chiesa di Santa Maria di Costantinopoli, antico convento eremitorio dei Padri Carmelitani, costruito all’epoca ai margini del centro abitato, oggi inserito nel tessuto urbano.
