Lying on the Tyrrhenian Sea in a sweeping curve between the mouth of the Garigliano and the Gulf of Policastro, Campania is chiefly a maritime region, a transit area and a node for the principal lines of communication which cross the Apennines, linking South Italy with the central-northern regions. It is the twelfth largest region, has the second highest number of inhabitants after Lombardy, and the highest density of population in Italy. It borders with Latium to the north-west, Molise to the north, Puglia to the north-east and Basilicata to the south. To the west it lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
History. Campania can structurally be divided into two clearly defined zones stretching northwest-southeast parallel to the coast. Inland rise the Campania and Lucanian Apennines, separated by the Sella di Conza (700 m.) and the upper Sele valley. About Baselice
Situated in the high Valle del Fortore, this territory was already populated before the Roman times, as testified by some archaeological findings.
The first sources date back to the year 1000, when the village was mentioned in the catalogue of the Norman barons.
It was a feud of Roberto Drago and Raimondo of Molise. It then belonged to the Mastrali brothers and in 1454 it was owned by Alphonse of Aragon, who ceded it to the Guevara family.
Afterwards it passed to the Caracciolo family, then to the Carafa and finally to the Rinuccini, who owned it until the fall of feudalism in 1806.
Initially, it was annexed to the province of Campobasso and then became part of the new province of Benevento.
NOT TO BE MISSED::
Mother church
Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie
Church of Santa Maria dell’Oliveto
Palaeontologic Museum, which holds fossils found in the territory about 20 million years ago.
