Lying on the Tyrrhenian Sea in a sweeping curve between the mouth of the Garigliano and the Gulf of Policastro, Campania is chiefly a maritime region, a transit area and a node for the principal lines of communication which cross the Apennines, linking South Italy with the central-northern regions. It is the twelfth largest region, has the second highest number of inhabitants after Lombardy, and the highest density of population in Italy. It borders with Latium to the north-west, Molise to the north, Puglia to the north-east and Basilicata to the south. To the west it lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
History. Campania can structurally be divided into two clearly defined zones stretching northwest-southeast parallel to the coast. Inland rise the Campania and Lucanian Apennines, separated by the Sella di Conza (700 m.) and the upper Sele valley. Territory and Economy of Campania
This southern region, washed by the Tyrhennian Sea, hosted the capital of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies up until the unification of Italy. The territory is 35% mountainous, 50% is hill country and the rest is flatland. The coastline consists of four large gulfs.
The region's wealth of history and natural beauty make tourism an important economic activity there. The most common crops are olives, grapes, vegetables, fruit and cereals.
Craftsmanship is of a good standard as is sheep breeding and fishing. Industry concentrates mainly on metal working, chemicals, shipbuilding, concrete, food products (baked goods and preserves) textiles, clothing and wood. Important aeronautics and aerospace technological centres have also developed in Naples and Caserta, cybernetics in Pozzuoli, and genetics, biophysics and biotechnology in Naples with the National Research Council.
Population: 5,701,931 inhabitants (*)
Surface area: 13,595 km²
Provinces: Naples, Avellino, Benevento, Case ... Read More...
