Lying on the Tyrrhenian Sea in a sweeping curve between the mouth of the Garigliano and the Gulf of Policastro, Campania is chiefly a maritime region, a transit area and a node for the principal lines of communication which cross the Apennines, linking South Italy with the central-northern regions. About Bonea
Its origins go back to the Samnite period, but ancient Roman remains, identified as Cocceio’s villa, also mentioned in the 6th Horace’s Satire, led to think that it was an important residential centre.
According to some scholars, where today the built-up area stands there was probably the ancient “Caudio”, destroyed in the 9th c.
It was a Hamlet of Montesarchio until the unity of Italy and became then a self-governing municipality.
NOT TO BE MISSED:
remains of Cocceio’s villa
remains of cistern of the Roman period
