Lying on the Tyrrhenian Sea in a sweeping curve between the mouth of the Garigliano and the Gulf of Policastro, Campania is chiefly a maritime region, a transit area and a node for the principal lines of communication which cross the Apennines, linking South Italy with the central-northern regions. It is the twelfth largest region, has the second highest number of inhabitants after Lombardy, and the highest density of population in Italy. It borders with Latium to the north-west, Molise to the north, Puglia to the north-east and Basilicata to the south. To the west it lies on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
History. Campania can structurally be divided into two clearly defined zones stretching northwest-southeast parallel to the coast. Inland rise the Campania and Lucanian Apennines, separated by the Sella di Conza (700 m.) and the upper Sele valley. Italy - Information on Santa Croce Del Sannio in the Province of Benevento
Archaeological finds attest that this land has been populated since ancient times. In the 8th century it was one of the Benedictines’ hamlets, who raised a cross in the times of the Saracen invasions, and the village was named after it.
Known as Santa Croce, then as Santa Croce di Morcone, it took its actual name in 1883, after being annexed to the province of Benevento.
The town is famous for being the birthplace of Giuseppe Maria Galanti (1743 – 1806), politician and famous economist, of Luigi Galanti (1756 – 1836), geographer and patriot, and of Girolamo Vitelli (1894 – 1935), famous philologist and papyrologist.
