Situated in Mediterranean Europe, Italy has land frontiers with France in the north-west, Switzerland and Austria in the north and Slovenia in the north-east. There is a great deal of variety in the landscape in Italy, although it is characterized predominantly by two mountain chains: the Alps and the Apennines. The former extends over 600 miles from east to west. It consists of great massifs in the western sector, with peaks rising to over 14,000 feet, including Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc), Monte Rosa and Cervino (the Matterhorn). Anche se note fin dai tempi di Plinio, i primissimi documenti che testimoniano l'uso terapeutico delle acque di Fiuggi, conservati negli archivi vaticani, risalgono al Medio Evo e fanno il nome di un paziente illustre, papa Bonifacio VIII, che beneficiò dell'effetto curativo di queste acque, oltre a Michelangelo, che guarì dalla calcolosi renale.Il complesso termale di Fiuggi si estende a valle della città, immerso nei boschi di castagni, querce e pini. E' composto da due stabilimenti idrotermali: la Fonte Bonifacio VIII e la Fonte Anticolana. La Fonte Bonifacio VIII fucostruita,all'inizio del secolo, in elegante stile liberty di cui rimane, oggi, solo il suggestivo portale di ingresso. è il luogo preferito per la cura mattutina, che va effettuata a digiuno.
