This is a region of peninsular Italy stretching between the central Apennines and the Adriatic coast in the area defined by the mouths of the rivers Tronto to the north and Trigno to the south. Of medium size, it borders to the north with the Marches, to the west with Latium, to the south with Molise, while to the east it lies on the Adriatic Sea: it is one of the least populated regions of Italy; its population density is lower than the national average.

Interesting Sights in Abruzzo

Abruzzo is the most protected region in Italy, with 28% of its territory designated as park land: the Abruzzo National Park, the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Parks, the Majella National Park, and the Sirente-Velino Regional Park. Among its interesting features are its villages, which are often portrayed in the works of Escher, that famous artist of the impossible.

Some sights worth visiting in the Abruzzo countryside include the Sirente Crater, symbol of natural ancestral beauty, and some sites holding various geographical "records": Calderone is the southernmost glacier in Europe; Rocca di Cambio is the municipality located at the highest altitude in Italy; Corno Grande is the highest peak in the Apennines. The Holy Face of Manoppello (said to be Veronica's veil) is considered the "Real Icon" of Jesus, which mysteriously disappeared from St. Peter's in the 17th century.

There is also evidence traceable to the bandits of the Tavola dei Briganti (Brigands' Table), as ... Read More...
