Situated in Mediterranean Europe, Italy has land frontiers with France in the north-west, Switzerland and Austria in the north and Slovenia in the north-east. There is a great deal of variety in the landscape in Italy, although it is characterized predominantly by two mountain chains: the Alps and the Apennines. The former extends over 600 miles from east to west. It consists of great massifs in the western sector, with peaks rising to over 14,000 feet, including Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc), Monte Rosa and Cervino (the Matterhorn). Massa Carrara in Toscana - Castello Malgrate
Il castello di Malgrate, con la sua caratteristica torre rotonda, domina da secoli la valle del fiume Bagnone. Il controllo è completo anche sulle importanti vie di comunicazione provenienti dall’Appennino, dalla Cisa e dalla Garfagnana. La fortificazione si sviluppa nel XIV secolo (la sua origine è probabilmente più antica) e da allora, sulla sua torre alta 25 metri e coronata da uno sbalzo di ronda con beccatelli, sventola, fino al XVII secolo, il vessillo dei marchesi Malaspina. Oltre a svolgere funzioni difensive il castello assume connotazione di residenza signorile nel 1641, quando il corpo centrale del complesso viene trasformato in palazzo, inglobando la torre rotonda.
Nonostante questo l’aspetto di Malgrate è quello della classica fortezza medievale: il corpo principale è costituito dal mastio, la torre sopra citata, situato sul lato corto del palazzo feudale a pianta rettangolare.
