Situated in Mediterranean Europe, Italy has land frontiers with France in the north-west, Switzerland and Austria in the north and Slovenia in the north-east. The peninsula is surrounded by the Ligurian Sea, the Sardinian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea in the west, the Sicilian Sea and the Ionian Sea in the south and the Adriatic Sea in the east. Italian is the language of the majority of the population but there are minorities speaking German, French, Slovene and Ladino.
There is a great deal of variety in the landscape in Italy, although it is characterized predominantly by two mountain chains: the Alps and the Apennines. The former extends over 600 miles from east to west. It consists of great massifs in the western sector, with peaks rising to over 14,000 feet, including Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc), Monte Rosa and Cervino (the Matterhorn). Castorano in the Province of Ascoli Piceno
Castorano rises in the Tronto valley on a slope in a delightful position, surrounded by vineyards and olive plantations, 18 Km. from Ascoli and 20 Km. from the Adriatic coast. Archeological diggings made in this area have revealed graves and objects from the prehistoric and Roman ages. The history of the town is linked to that of Ascoli, which held Castorano as its castle since 1200.
St. Maria della Visitazione Church (chiesa di S. Maria della Visitazione), built during the XVIth century, houses a silver relief cross containing saints' relics, works of local art from the 1500's.
Few remains of the old city walls are still visible today. Among the principal monuments of the town we cannot forget St. Giovanni Battista Church (chiesa di S. Giovanni Battista) built in 1534 and located in the Pescolla hamlet: besides the belfry sundial, the church houses paintings by Ludovico Trasi and a XVIIIth century organ.
