Situated in Mediterranean Europe, Italy has land frontiers with France in the north-west, Switzerland and Austria in the north and Slovenia in the north-east. Italian is the language of the majority of the population but there are minorities speaking German, French, Slovene and Ladino.
There is a great deal of variety in the landscape in Italy, although it is characterized predominantly by two mountain chains: the Alps and the Apennines. The former extends over 600 miles from east to west. It consists of great massifs in the western sector, with peaks rising to over 14,000 feet, including Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc), Monte Rosa and Cervino (the Matterhorn). Barberino Val d'Elsa in Tuscany Italy
The territory of Barberino Val d'Elsa - The communal territory covers an area of 65.88 square kilometers (25.44 sq. m.) perched on the hills separating the valleys of the Pesa and Elsa rivers. The zone slopes gently down toward the Elsa. The altitude never exceeds 400 meters (1,312 ft.) and the town itself is situated at 373 meters (1,223 ft.).
Slightly less than half the district extends into the Chianti Classico zone. Barberino Val d’Elsa is bordered by the communes of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, Castellina in Chianti, Poggibonsi, San Gimignano, Certaldo and Montespertoli. Barberino Val d’Elsa has 3,500 inhabitants (1991) and 21.2% of the working population is engaged in agriculture, especially the cultivation of grapes and olives.
