Situated in Mediterranean Europe, Italy has land frontiers with France in the north-west, Switzerland and Austria in the north and Slovenia in the north-east. The peninsula is surrounded by the Ligurian Sea, the Sardinian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea in the west, the Sicilian Sea and the Ionian Sea in the south and the Adriatic Sea in the east. Italian is the language of the majority of the population but there are minorities speaking German, French, Slovene and Ladino.
There is a great deal of variety in the landscape in Italy, although it is characterized predominantly by two mountain chains: the Alps and the Apennines. The former extends over 600 miles from east to west. It consists of great massifs in the western sector, with peaks rising to over 14,000 feet, including Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc), Monte Rosa and Cervino (the Matterhorn). Castello e Museo Civico "F. Baldinucci", Lari - Pisa in Toscana
Il castello risulta facilmente individuabile per l’inconfondibile planimetria circolare con doppio giro di mura, al centro delle quali si erge tutt’oggi, su un maestoso basamento scarpato, quanto rimane dell’antico edificio. Non si conosce quando il primo nucleo castellano sia stato costruito sebbene non sia difficile farlo risalire all’alto Medioevo, trovandosi Lari su una delle direttrici scoperte e sfruttate dai duchi longobardi nelle loro azioni di penetrazione in Toscana e verso il Meridione d’Italia. Si accede alla rocca mediante una rampa di 95 scalini; a metà di essa si trova una cisterna costruita nel 1448 e sovrastata dallo stemma dei Pitti e degli Scali, vicari di Lari. La struttura attualmente visibile risale alla prima metà del Seicento. Nel piazzale della fortificazione, dotata di altissime mura fortemente scarpate costruite in mattoni, spicca il Palazzo Pretorio con la facciata ancora ricoperta dei numerosi stemmi dei vari podestà succedutisi in Lari.
