Origin of the Names of the Italian Regions
The name of 11 regions of the Italian peninsula can be dated back to the times of emperor Augustus (Excluding the islands of Sicily, Sardinia and Corsica – that were considered extra metropolitan territories) and are the following:
(i) LAZIO and CAMPANIA; (ii) PUGLIA and CALABRIA (this last one indicated only the actual territory of Salentino); (iii) LUCANIA and BRUZZIO (today Basilicata and Calabria); (iv) SANNIO; V PICENO; (vi) Umbria; WAYS ETRURIA; (viii) GALLIA CISPADANA (Emilia); (ix) LIGURIA; (x) VENECIA and ISTRIA; (xi) GALLIA TRASPADANA (today Lombardia with the addition of Valle d’ Aosta and a small part of Piedemont) (here the geographic paper of Italy Augustea).
After the modifications made by Diocleziano and other emperors the regions became 16:
LAZIO and CAMPANIA; (2) TUSCIA and UMBRIA; (34) PICENO; (4) VALERIA (the Rietino); (5) SANNIO; (6) PUGLIA and CALABRIA (today’s Puglia); (7) LUCANIA and BRUZZIO (today Calabria and Basilicata); (8) VENICE and ISTRIA; (9) EMILIA, (10) FLAMINIA (part of today’s Emilia and Marche); (11) LIGURIA (Lombardia and a good chunk of Piemonte); (12) the ALPS COZIE; (13) REZIA PRIMA (today’s Trentino Alto-Adige); (14) CORSICA; (15) SARDINIA and SICILY). (16) the REZIA SECONDA that wasn’t part of Italy and comprised today’s Austrian Tirolo).
In the Middle Ages, this distinction gradually begins to disappear, and the after the barbaric invasion of the Longobardi the names are widely forgotten. The “ducati” (duchies) are born, togheter with the new political districts (bizantine and longobarde);, and the ecclesiastic districts and from then on the fragmentation process that gave birth to “Comuni” and “Signorie”. Only during the reinassance some of the names returned in use, but only for a short period of time.
Only in the first half of the 1800's, with the actual political unification of Italy the Auguestean region names went back to their old glory and most of them are still in use today.
