Day Trips in Friuli-Venezia Giulia - Inland
Going inland just a little, the first surprise is the ancient town of Aquileia, with its Roman Forum, its museums and ancient basilica - the "mater" of Christianity within a vast Italian and European territory. Not far away is Palmanova, a star-shaped town built by the Venetian Republic in the 16th century as a fortress against Turkish invasions, which still retains its original structure. The journey continues towards Cividale, the ancient "Forum Julii" (hence the name Friuli) and then "Civitas Austriae", the seat of the first Lombard Duchy in Italy, with very precious historic and artistic remnants (above all the "Lombard Temple") and a medieval historic centre. The town has always been a meeting point for different cultures and languages, which still happens every year in July with the "Mittelfest", a festival with spectacles from Central Europe. From Cividale, Udine is just a stone's throw away. The castle dominates the whole of the elegant city with its rich fabric of palaces, churches and museums, and the triumph of Tiepolo in the Bishop's Palace. Continuing along we arrive in Pordenone, formerly known as "Portus Naonis", a highly industrial city which, however, bears witness to the past in the beautiful ancient part of the town. But from Udine you can also reach Gorizia with its elegant, typically "Austrian" structure.
