History of Apulia

Apulia's history is one of wayfarers, invaders and conquerors, one of dialogue and exchange between civilisations, cultures and faiths.

Along the Ionian coast from Metaponto to Gallipoli, the Messapi and Japigi were the first to meet the Greek world. Then came the Roman legions advancing along roads such as the Appian Way that led all the way to Brindisi, the seaport where they boarded the triremes on their way to conquer the sea. A whirlwind of invaders followed: the Byzantines, whose Orthodox traces still remain today, and then the Normans, followed by the Swabs, Angevins, Aragonese and Bourbons. Each left its mark on the urban design, architecture, art and even on the different dialects spoken, from Griko, an ancient dialect of south east Salento, to expressions of French and Spanish origin.
