History of Trentino-Alto Adige

Trentino-Alto Adige was formed in 1948 with the Regional Statute of Autonomy, pursuant to the De Gasperi-Gruber agreement in 1946, which ensured the protection of Alto Adige's linguistic and administrative autonomy.

Trentino, inhabited since the Mesolithic Age, was a Roman Province, and the founding of Tridentum dates back to this period. In 1004 Trento became a bishop's principality, and from 1545 to 1563 the Council of Trent was held, which marked the beginning of the Counter-Reformation. In 1777 the treaty between the last Bishop Prince and Maria Teresa of Austria linked the region to the county of the Tyrol, and in 1803 the territory fell under the rule of the Hapsburgs and was annexed to the province of the Tyrol. After the Great War, Trentino became part of Italy (1918). The De Gasperi-Gruber agreement of '46 laid the foundations for the Statute under which Trentino became an Autonomous Province. Alto Adige has been inhabited since 7000 BC.

The Rhaetic population was converted to Christianity in the 4th century. In the Middle Ages, the present Alto Adige was a southern region of the Tyrol under the Hapsburgs and, in 1919, after the First World War it was annexed to Italy. Under the 1948 Statute a "package" of measures was drawn up to implement autonomy for the Province of Bolzano, which were approved in 1969 by the Italian and Austrian Governments and perfected in 1972 (second autonomy statute). The final measures were implemented in 1992 and the "package" was considered complete.
