History of Abruzzo
Abruzzo is an ancient region that bears witness to the earliest Italic civilisations. In league against Rome (Corfinio, 91 BC), its peoples (Equi, Frentanes, Marsians, Marrucines, Paelignias, Samnites and Vestines) were the first to use the adjective Italic with a political meaning.
Symbolic of this period is the Capestrano Warrior, a 4th-century BC funerary stele and icon of this great past. The Pax Romana this great civilisation left an imprint on the entire territory of this great civilisation.
Subsequent dominations, from the Normans to the Bourbons, left the mark of other cultures on this setting of rare beauty, as can be see in its many architectural gems.
During the Italian Risorgimento, resistance to the Piedmontese caused a period of repression which had a strong bearing on the region's history.
Emigration in the 1900s led to the abandonment of beautiful hamlets which, often left intact, have since become some of the most charming testimonies to a regional past rich in tradition.
