Information about Sant'Egidio alla Vibrata in the Province of Ascoli Piceno
Sant'Egidio alla Vibrata lies on the northern border of the Vibrata Valley (called "la Vbbrata" in local slang). The town has been renowned since the Roman period thanks to its skilful craftworkers and dyers of purpura (bright red colour) material and today it still holds a fore-front position in the textile industry and in the production of candy-coated almonds.
Among the town's artistic monuments we must suggest St. Egidio Abate Church (XIIth cent.), with three naves, whose layout reveals the succession of different artistic styles, from the apse dating from the second half of the XIIth century, to the 1524 façade. The last remodelling, commissioned by the Ascoli Bishop-Prince in 1555, is documented on a stone tablet. Among its furnishings, one finds a valuable wooden statue made at the end of the XVth century and representing the Madonna, a reliquary cross and a wooden crucifix from the XVIth century.
At the border of the inhabited centre we find the Madonna di Reggio Chapel, having a single nave and a small apse. The portal is dated 1740 but the style of the entire building is typical of the first half of the XVIIth century. A painting of the "Madonna di Reggio o della Ghiara" of the XVIIth century is conserved within.
Placed in Faraone hamlet, the Porta di Faraone represents the gateway to the old fortified village, probably dating back to Medieval times. Even though the spot has been left in a state of abandon due to damage caused by earthquakes, one can still admire, besides the gateway, city walls, an old church and antique houses.
The buildings we see today in the town centre were mainly erected during the XVIIIth and XIXth centuries.
