Italy - Information on Vitulano in the Province of Benevento
It is situated at the foot of the Dormiente del Sannio, formed by Mount Pentime, Mount Camposauro and Mount Caruso. It is rich in forests and springs, such as Fontana Reale, Cortedonica, Foggiano and San Pietro. The most famous source in this area is the so-called Royal Fountain. The spring Cortedonica quenches the townsfolk’s thirst.
The “Grotta dei Briganti” is at the foot of Mount Pentime. It is a prehistorical town settlement dating back to the Neolithic. Silicious blades, points of arrows, scrapers and a set of pottery (2900 b.C.) were found in the cave.
It was a Samnite settlement and in the Middle Ages it was part of a steward’s land, in Tocco’s pay. Later on it was Giulio Acquaviva d’Aragona’s feud; then it passed to the Carafa family and to the D’Avalos. The economy is based on agricolture and its farm produce include excellent wine and olive-oil and cheese, like the “Pecorino Vitulanese” (sheep’s milk cheese).
The marble quarry “Marmi di Vitulano” is at the foot of Mount Pizzo.
The marble from Vitulano was used to build the Royal Palaces of Caserta, Naples and Portici. At the end of the 19th century it was even exported to France, England, North America, Australia and to the Cremlin in Moscow.
