Italy - Information on Sassinoro in the Province of Benevento

Dating back to the Samnite Age and populated in the Roman Age, as finds attest, Sassinoro expanded under the Longobard rule, and became famous thanks to a Sasson colony in Alboino's pay, who settled here.

It was St. Sofia’s Abbey’s estate in the 11th century first, then it was several landlords’ feud and was destroyed by earthquakes in 1456 and 1805. The built-up area of the historical centre expanded after the earthquake in 1805. On the abolition of feudalism it was annexed to the region of Molise, and on the unity of Italy it became commune in the province of Benevento.

The town is a religious tourist destination because of the Sanctuary of St. Lucia and of the cult to St. Michele Arcangelo, to whom the dean church is dedicated.

NOT TO BE MISSED:
1. Old hamlet
2. Sanctuary of St. Lucia
3. Church of St. Michele Archangelo
4. Church of St. Maria delle Grazie
