Italy - Information on San Marco dei Cavoti in the Province of Benevento
San Marco dei Cavoti is one of the most famous towns in Valfortore, thanks to several small industrial enterprises. Its production of torrone is important and well known in Italy. The first handicraft factory was set up in the remote 1891, and the other workshops founded over the years produce various kinds of torrone: from the famous croccantini, to the tasty chocolate, gianduia, coffee, lemon and orange torrone.
The origins of this town are medioeval: it was mentioned in 1385 for the first time. The old Samnite town of Cenna stood in Zenna, even if it was not very far from the built-up area. It is certain that San Marco was founded by a Provençal colony, who was in the Angevins’ service.
The word Cavoti comes from the French “Gavots” and means the townsfolk of Gap, a city in Provence, from which the most numerous colony seemed to come. It was a feud of the Gaetani family first and then of the Cavaniglia family, the latters being marchesses who possesed it up to 1648, when the town-dwellers revolted against their government. It passed afterwards to the Caracciolo family, who owned it until feudalism was abolished. In 1861 it became part of the province of Benevento.
