Italy - Information on San Giorgio La Molara in the Province of Benevento

It is situated on the top of a hill in the Samnite Apennines, in the midst of a plain run through by the rivers Tammarecchia and Sanzano. The economy of this place has always been based on agricolture, thanks to the more and more increasing production of cereals and to a lot of olive groves and vineyards. Archaeological finds attest it has been populated since the Roman Age, but the built-up area became a fortified town only in the Norman Age.

It was a feud of the Gaetani family, then of the Carafa and Caracciolo families.
Ferdinando IV the Bourbon took possession of this piece of land and gave it to Cardinal Fabrizio Ruffo, whose relatives owned it up to the abolition of feudalism.
The beautiful Lake S. Giorgio is only a few kilometres away from the built-up area, surrounded by trees and meadows. People go there all year round.

NOT TO BE MISSED:
1. Iazzeolla palace
2. Lake St. Giorgio
