Italy - Information on San Bartolomeo in Galdo in the Province of Benevento

San Bartolomeo in Galdo is one of the most important villages of the province of Benevento, famous for its natural beauties. Surrounded by green hills, this land is rich in water sources and courses and the countyside offers luxuriant vineyards and fruit trees. Its history began in the Low Middle Ages, even though some archaeological findings testify that it was inhabited even in ancient times.

In 1253, during the battle between the Saracen troops and the Papal army, the centre was pillaged and abandoned by its inhabitants; subsequently the Angevin rebuilt the whole village and, for a long time, its territories were part of the possessions of the Benedectines of the Abbey St. Maria del Gualdo di Mazzocca. Important civil and religious buildings are visible today, commissioned by the bishops of the Diocese of Volturara, who chose San Bartolomeo as their summer residence.

NOT TO BE MISSED:
1. Church of St. Antonio
2. Church of the Annunziata
3. Monastery and church of St. Maria degli Angeli
