Italy - Information on Pontelandolfo in the Province of Benevento
Pontelandolfo is situated in the middle of a charming natural envionment rich in olive groves and vineyards. Several archaeological findings testify that it was already inhabited during the Samnite-Roman period and that, in the Longobard age, it belonged to Landolfo, Prince of Benevento, which explains the origins of its name.
The current built-up area developed during the Norman-Swabian period around an imposing fortress, of which the massive tower is still visible. It was a noble feud until the abolition of feudalism.
Under Ferdinand II the Bourbon sheep-breeding activities and handicrafts production developed significantly, as well as the production of textiles and needlework: the famous “panno-lana” (wollen clith) of Pontelandolfo is still very popular today. After the unity of Italy the village was the theatre of a violent repression of brigandage, together with the neighbouring village of Casalduni: both villages are mentioned in history books with reference to the slaughter of 14 August 1861.
