Italy - Information on Pietrelcina in the Province of Benevento
Pietrelcina is situated on a bend of a tributary of the river Tammaro. It is famous all over the world because here, on 25 May 1887, exactly in Vico Storto Valle n. 32, Francesco Forgione (Padre Pio from Pietrelcina) was born and baptized in the church St. Anna. Padre Pio was canonized on 16 June 2002 by Pope John Paul II.
Pietrelcina, fascinating agricultural village of ancient origins, located on a spur, was mentioned for the first time in a document dated 1101. During the centuries the village was a feud of several families: the Caracciolo, the D’Aquino, the Carafa and the famous jurist Bartolomeo Camerario. It has belonged to the province of Benevento since 1861, after the unity of Italy.
