Italy - Information on Pietraroja in the Province of Benevento

The origins of Pietraroja date back to the Samnite Age. In the Middle Ages it belonged to Goffredo Di Marzano, Earl of Alife; it passed then to the Gaetani family, finally to Carafa until the abolition of feudalism in 1806. From 1860 to 1870 it suffered brigandage: there were a lot of fights between brigands and soldiers.

Today the economy of Pietraroja is based on agriculture. The town is also fit for holiday thanks to its comfortable climate and to the excursions that can be made to the skiing spot of Bocca della Selva.

It is renowned above all for an important discovery, unique in the world: a fossil of a whelp dinosaur. The whelp was called “Scipionyx Samniticus” in homage to the geologist Scipione Breislak, who studied the fossils in Pietraroja for the first time in 1798. The finding is informally called “Ciro”.

NOT TO BE MISSED:
1. Historical centre
2. Church of St. Maria Assunta, built in 1695 with a beautiful stone portal
3. Geo-palaeontological Park, with fossils dating back to 200 million years ago
