Italy - Information on Paupisi in the Province of Benevento

Paupisi, old hamlet near the village of Torrecuso, is surrounded by a countryside rich in olive-groves, vineyards and chestnut trees, as attested in a Papal bull in 1350.
This place is renowned for being the land of olive oil and wine. It is not a coincidence that the Town-Hall coat-of-arms represents a tower encircled by vines and olives. We find ourselves in the land of the ”Aglianico” wine, one of the most famous d.o.c. wines of the local wine production.

Well-grounded historical data goes back to the Middle Ages, when it was a hamlet of the neighbouring Torrecuso, sharing its history and government.
It was the Frangipane family’s, Della Leonessa’s, Caracciolo’s, Ceva Grimaldi’s, finally the Dukes of Sangro’s estate, who owned it until to the abolition of feudalism.

NOT TO BE MISSED:
1. Historical centre
2. The “funnico”, old market place dating back to the 15th century
3. Church of Santa Maria del Bosco
4. Church of Maria Santissima dei Pagani
