Italy - Information on Morcone in the Province of Benevento
In a charming, luxuriant hill landscape, rich in olive groves, almost on the borders between the Sannio and the Molise, the town of Morcone is situated, on the deep slopes of a cliff. Lively agricultural and commercial centre, Morcone is today an ideal destination for relaxing holidays, with its comfortable accomodation and typical restaurants. Its origins date back to the Samnite period, but well-grounded news brings us back to the Longobard period, when it was a castaldato in 776 a.C and bishop’s seat from 1058 to 1122.
Under the Norman, Swabian and Angevin dominations the organization of the Universitas developed, in which the people, proud of their governmental autonomy, elected its representatives.
With the abolition of feudalism, Morcone became part of Molise and, after the unity of Italy, was annexed to the province of Benevento. The medioeval town planning, wisely restored, has kept its historical centre, developed around the Rocca (fortress).
The village is characterized by deep stairs, hanging gardens looking onto the valley. Widenings and small squares suddenly open out among the tiny alleys, so creating a breath-taking view.
